If you’ve been around the courts lately, you’ve probably heard the buzz: DUPR just dropped a major update to its rating system—and it's not just a minor tweak. This change is reshaping how performance is evaluated in pickleball, and it’s something every player and tournament director should understand.
We’re teaming up with DUPR to break it all down in a live, interactive webinar—and you’ll want to be there.
Until now, DUPR ratings were largely determined by wins and losses. If you won, your rating went up. If you lost, it went down.
Not anymore.
The new DUPR algorithm is performance-based, not outcome-based. It looks at how you performed compared to expectations, based on both players’ ratings going into the match.
If you outperform expectations—even in a loss—your rating can go up.
If you underperform—even in a win—your rating might drop.

Doubles: If a 4.0 team is expected to win 11–3 but wins 11–8, that’s underperforming. Their rating decreases, and the losing team’s rating may actually rise.
Singles: If a 3.5 player loses 9–11 to a 4.0, that’s exceeding expectations. Their DUPR goes up.
This shift rewards effort, competitiveness, and consistency—not just the scoreboard. That means every point now counts.
This update does more than just reflect player performance—it transforms how tournaments are seeded, bracketed, and perceived.
As a tournament director, you’re shaping the competitive landscape.
Here’s how the new algorithm helps:
✅ Better Seeding: More accurate ratings mean tighter matchups and fewer lopsided games.
✅ Player Motivation: Even in a tough loss, players know their performance matters.
✅ Bracket Integrity: Especially in age/skill and round robin events, players can trust that the system recognizes skill—not just results.
✅ Less Sandbagging Pressure: Rising players don’t need to drop down brackets to improve—they just need to perform well.
This system empowers you to run better events that players respect and return to.
We’ve heard the feedback, the confusion, and the curiosity. So we’re bringing in a DUPR representative live to answer your top questions.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- How the new algorithm works in plain English
