Additional Information
DUPR
The Grand Mesa Open is using DUPR to determine player skill ratings and seeding. When registering, a player's DUPR will determine the minimum skill level at which they may compete. Under the GMO registration guidelines, players may play up in skill level. If, following registration and before the tournament, the Tournament Director determines that a player's DUPR has changed significantly, the TD may require that the player compete at the updated skill level. There will be no exceptions.
Players are encouraged to ensure that their DUPR accounts are up-to-date and accurate. If a player needs to establish a DUPR account, Rocky Mountain Pickleball urges them to set one up before competing in the Grand Mesa Open and include their account number during registration. If needed, use this link: (dashboard.dupr.com/signup).
FORMAT OF PLAY
As part of our continued commitment to enhancing the player experience, the 2025 Grand Mesa Open will use a modified Round-Robin playing format. The RR format ensures players an increase in the guaranteed number of matches and reduced wait time between matches. The following summarizes how the events will be run.
BRACKETS WITH FIVE OR FEWER TEAMS
Teams will play in a round-robin format.
The number of teams in the bracket determines the number of matches to be played. (e.g., If five teams are in the bracket, each team will play four matches.)
Matches are one game to 15; win by 2
Winners are determined by the total number of matches won.
Tie breaks will be determined using IFP guidelines (see below).
The medal round will include the top two teams competing for gold and the second two teams for bronze.
The medal matches will use a best of three games, to 11, (win by 2) format.
BRACKETS WITH SIX OR SEVEN TEAMS
Teams will play in a round-robin format.
The number of teams in the bracket determines the number of matches to be played. (e.g., If seven teams are in the bracket, each team will play six matches.)
Matches are one game to 11; win by 2
Winners are determined by the total number of matches won.
Tie breaks will be determined using IFP guidelines (see below).
The medal round will include the top two teams competing for gold and the second two teams for bronze.
The medal matches will use a best of three games, to 11, (win by 2) format.
BRACKETS WITH EIGHT OR MORE TEAMS:
Teams will be divided into pools and compete in a round-robin format. Each team plays one game, to 15 (win by 2), against the other teams in that pool.
Team placement in pools will be based on seeding, using a player's skill ratings. For example: in a two pool event with ten players, the top seed will be placed in Pool 1 and second seed placed in Pool 2, followed by alternating pool placement throughout the draw.
Tie breaks will be determined using IFP guidelines (see below).
Each pool's top two winning teams will advance to a playoff round.
The playoff round will match the top team from each pool playing against the second place team from the other pool. Playoff round matches will use a single game, to 15 (win by 2) format. The playoff round for brackets with three or more pools will include a seeded bracket to determine the teams playing in the medal round.
Winners from the playoff matches will compete in a gold medal match.
Second place teams will compete in the bronze medal match.
The medal matches will use a best of three games, to 11, (win by 2) format.
HEAD TO HEAD TIEBREAKER (IFP):
First tie-breaker: head-head matches won
Second tie-breaker is the point differential of all games played.
Third tie-breaker: head-to-head point differential of all games played
Fourth tie-breaker: point differential against the next-highest team.
(e.g., If the teams are tied for second, use point differentials against the first-place team.)
Medal Match FORMAT will be Single Elimination i.e. NO COME AROUND
IF THE BRACKET IS COMBINED, ONLY ONE SET OF MEDALS IS AWARDED TO THE TOP THREE (3) PLAYERS/TEAMS OF THE COMBINED BRACKET.
PLAYERS NEEDING PARTNERS
Players needing partners can use the link on the Grand Mesa Open tournament page to communicate with other players needing partners.
PLAYER RESPONSIBILITY
What does it mean to be registered?
Player in a singles event has registered and paid their tournament fees by the payment deadline
Player in a doubles event; both players have registered and both players have paid their tournament fees by the payment deadline
You or your team could be moved to the Waitlist:
AFTER AUGUST 5TH, 2025, if you are playing in a doubles event and
You do not have a partner or your partner does not register within seven days of you registering you will automatically be moved to the waitlist. Your spot in the event will NOT be saved. If, after you are both registered and paid, there is room in the event, you will be moved back into the event. Note that if the event has filled up before you secure a partner or your partner has paid, you will remain on the waitlist until a spot opens.
Playing in Events:
Brackets will be filled on a first come basis. As a waitlist develops, we will be managing bracket sizes to accommodate demand and court availability. Therefore, bracket maximums may be adjusted from registration opening to day of play.
PARTNER REPLACEMENT POLICY
After registration is closed, any registered player losing a partner must replace that partner with an already registered player. The replacement partner must be in the same skill/age group that you are scheduled to play. Players can play down in age and up in skill. Replacements need to be known and communicated to the registration coordinator, Robin Weaver at rgweaver56@gmail.com by 6pm the day before you are scheduled to play. Replacements can be found on the players needing partners list.
REFEREE COVERAGE
The 2025 Grand Mesa Open policy regarding match officiating recognizes and combines the importance of player experience and the logistics of efficiently utilizing the tournament's officiating team. Professional, alert, and rested Referees are as crucial as any other element in a well-run tournament. The tournament's responsibility is to provide its players with officiating based on these criteria. While appreciating the significance of match officiating, it represents one of many factors critical to ensuring an optimal tournament experience.
The Operations and Referee Coordinators will make every effort during the GMO to ensure that all medal matches are officiated. However, this may not be possible or in the player's best interest under certain unforeseen circumstances. The process of determining referee coverage during the RMC is based on two key factors: the availability of referees and the significance of the match (such as a medal match). Except for the medal matches, the court assignment/scheduling priorities will limit the time players wait between matches while maximizing the usage of available courts and available Referees. If, when a match is being assigned to a court, the Referee Coordinator determines that a referee is available and not required for an upcoming medal match, he and the Operations Coordinator may elect to have the match officiated.
Rocky Mountain Pickleball continues to focus on player experience and maintaining its role as the region's premier pickleball organizer. We hope the preceding illustrates this and look forward to welcoming you to the 2025 Grand Mesa Open.
Court conditions, weather, and player safety will determine decisions to adjust match/game format, and suspend or cancel play. If brackets are in mid-match when weather or unforeseen circumstance occurs, the tournament will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis to determine if the bracket may be finished or if winners will be determined. The tournament's decision will be final. NO REFUNDS DUE TO WEATHER OR OTHER UNFORESEEN CONDITIONS RESULTING IN REDUCED OR CANCELED MATCHES WILL BE MADE.
